The Story

The Mai-Kai Derby Daiquiri glass is a vintage, highly collectible piece of mid-century barware featuring a distinctive jockey-shaped stem. Originally manufactured by the Morgantown Glassware Guild, it was used at the Mai-Kai restaurant to serve the famous “Derby Daiquiri” cocktail, which was the official drink of the Florida Derby in 1959.

The glass is a stemware piece with a clear bowl and a stem molded in the detailed shape of a jockey. The most iconic version, used at the Mai-Kai, has a golden amber stem, though clear and frosted stem versions also exist. The glass measures approximately 5.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches in diameter, with a capacity of about 6 fluid ounces.

The glass was designed specifically for the Mai-Kai’s “Derby Daiquiri” cocktail, created by the restaurant’s master mixologist, Mariano Licudine, in 1958. In 1959, the drink was proclaimed the official cocktail of the Florida Derby, leading to a synergistic marketing relationship between the restaurant, the event, and Rums of Puerto Rico.

The Drink

Derby Daiquiri – The Kentucky Derby had the Mint Julep, so the Gulfstream Derby in Florida held a contest to create its signature drink. Leonce Picot, who was a consultant for Rums of Puerto Rico as well as assistant manager of the Mai-Kai, suggested they enter the contest. He challenged Mariano Licudine, “The Houdini of the Liquids,” to come up with a drink featuring Florida products. Mariano’s new Derby Daiquiri won the contest and was named the official drink of the Derby. This drink was used at the Mai-Kai restaurant to serve as the famous Derby Daiquiri cocktail, which was the official drink of the Florida Derby in 1959.
