Shanghai Lil's was a restaurant known for its Polynesian food, a floorshow, and exotic drinks. The building it occupied was originally called "The Quid" and had a swimming pool, which was later filled in to accommodate Shanghai Lil's. It eventually closed and was replaced by the Belli Club for a couple of years.

The restaurant was known for its escapist atmosphere and was a popular spot for dancing, socializing, and enjoying cocktails. It also had a reputation as a celebrity hangout, attracting notable figures. The original Shanghai Lil's was distinct from the newer one that emerged later, which had a den-like feel with a courtyard, spiral staircase, and views of the Sky Tower. The original Shanghai Lil's was also known for its eccentric owner, Russel Green, and his jazz pianist, Billy Farnell.
