The Royal Hawaiian, the "Pink Palace of the Pacific," opened in 1927 as a $4 million luxury resort for Matson Navigation Company steamship passengers. Designed in a Moorish style, it has been a popular spot for celebrities and dignitaries since its opening, including the creation of the Shirley Temple drink in its Mai Tai bar. The hotel was used as a Navy recreation center during WWII and was restored after the war, eventually being purchased by Sheraton, then the Osano brothers, and today is managed by Marriott under its Luxury Collection brand.
