The Story

Orchids of Hawaii was a restaurant supply company known for producing Tiki mugs and other ceramics, primarily for the restaurant and bar industry. They operated from the Bronx, New York, and sourced their ceramics from Japan and later Taiwan. The company was active for a period between 1962 and 1994, with the Japanese production likely preceding the Taiwanese. Orchids of Hawaii, along with Otagiri Mercantile Company (OMC), were major mass producers of these collectible items.

The Drink

Skullduggery – In this cocktail, overproof rum helps to temper the sweetness of the coconut and passion fruit that give the drink its creamy texture and brings your attention back to the dark rum at the base of the drink. This means you’ll taste sweet coconut and molasses-kissed rum in each note. It also means that this concoction is dangerously easy to drink, as it strikes such a perfect balance between rum and fruit.

Dark Rum – 1 ½ ounces
Demerara 151 Rum  – ¼ ounce
Pineapple Juice – 3 ounces
Cream of Coconut – 1 ounce
Passion Fruit Puree – 1 ounce

Combine all ingredients in a shaker and fill with ice cubes. Shake vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds, until very cold. Strain the contents of the shaker into the Headhunter Mug filled with crushed ice. Garnish with an orange skull.

How to make an orange skull garnish – Use a vegetable peeler to remove a 2-inch strip of peel from an orange peel. Use a small skull-shaped cookie cutter or a knife to fashion the orange peel strip into a skull. Use a hole punch or a straw to punch out the eyes and nose of the skull.
